What are symphonic poems?

Strauss' Symphonic Poems:  (A Full List of Strauss' Symphonic Poems)

Aus Italien (From Italy), Op. 16  (1886)  (sometimes not considered a tone poem because
it has four movements like a symphony)

     Don Juan, Op. 20  (1888)

     Macbeth, Op. 23  (1888)

Tod und Verklärung  (Death and Transfiguration), Op. 24  (1889)

Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche  (Till Eulenspeigel's Merry Pranks), Op. 28  (1895)

Strauss' Last Important Orchestra Work:

     Metamorphosen ("a study for 23 solo strings")  (1944 - 45):

Note:  Strauss composed two symphonies (1880, 1884) in his teens when he was
still composing in the romantic style before he turned modernistic.

Examples of Other Strauss Genres:

Strauss was a prolific composer of lieder (German art songs), lieder cycles, and
numerous choral works with and without orchestra.

Strauss composed many pieces of chamber music with his Cello Sonata in F major
        perhaps being the most important.

He composed five concertos with Horn Concerto No. 2 (1942) and the Violin
Concerto (1882) probably being the most performed.
